Our Lady of Tihvin represents a type the Mother of God "Odigitry", distinguished from her only by more free turn of a Christ figure and his crossed legs occupy such posture, that the right food sole is visible naked. Feature of the given type of the image the Mother of God is her dialogue with the God-Child, their look against each other. According to a legend, the icon the Mother of God of Tikhvin, painted itself Evangelist Luke, was brought by the angels from Konstantinopol in 1383, appeared waters of Ladoga lake and has stopped within of Tikhvin in Novgorod soil. In 15th-16th century the reverence her was distributed everywhere, especially after visiting a Tikhvin monastery great Prince Ivan (John) III in 1526. Before an icon the Mother of God of Tikhvin were people prayed for "preservation of the children health ".
For old-believers, the icon of the Mother of God of Tikhvin was the authority of right portrayal and was revered as a painted by Apostle Luke.
