13. The Jesus Christ the Savior

The highest level of painting. The icon was cleaned from the darkened layer of drying oil.
The icon represents Christ in blessing with left hand resting on a book. The icon was created at the fine of the 19th century in Mstera ( or Bogoyavlenskaya sloboda) village near the city of Vladimir in Vladimir government. The village is famous with country icon business. Archive sources let us know that in the middle of the 19th century there were 280 icon painters in Mstera. The icon was written by good master but were is intended for village people.

A strict and laconic image of the Savior is painted on a highest professional level. The painter achieved a tremendous deepness of the image. Thin and elegant features of the face are shaded by the gorgeous nimbus of two colours. This very extraordinary feature of the icon was characteristic for the Mstera icon workshop.
