11. The Burning Bush

Late 19th century. Mstera school.
Wood, lewkas, gold, tempera.
Size: 30,5x26x2,5 cm.



This subject is based on the vision of Moses on Mt. Horeb. The Virgin and Child are within an oval mandorla, contained within two curved squares, forming an octagonal star - the symbol of the future aeon. In the corners, there are the symbols of the four Evangelists, spreading their words to the Four Corners of the world. Angels surround the Virgin. Icons of this subject are believed to protect against fire.

This icon has interior and collection significance.
