Second half of the19th century.
Wood (cypress), lewkas, tempera.
Size: 22,5x18x1,5 cm.

High quality, school painting, executed in 17 century traditions. Classical example of the traditions of Russian iconography. Very good condition.

Our Lady of Tihvin represents a type the Mother of God "Odigitry", distinguished from her only by more free turn of a Christ figure and his crossed legs occupy such posture, that the right foot sole is visible naked. Feature of the given type of the image the Mother of God is her dialogue with the child. According to a legend, the icon of the Mother of God of Tikhvin painted itself to Evangelist Luke, was brought by the angels from Konstantinopol in 1383, later appeared waters of Ladoga lake and has stopped within of Tikhvin in Novgorod soil. In 15th-16th century the reverence her was distributed everywhere, especially after visiting a Tikhvin monastery great Prince Ivan (John) III in 1526. Before the icon of the Mother of God of Tikhvin were used by people who prayed for "preservation of the children health ".

For old-believers, the icon of the Mother of God of Tikhvin was the authority of right portrayal and was revered as a painting by Apostle Luke.
