Ancient Russian icon with professional, excellent level of painting. Golden background. Ideal condition.

Rare Russian Icon of the Saint Michael Arkhistrategos (Chief Captain of the host). Here Michael’s depiction is based on the Book of Revelation. He is shown as the chief captain (Greek - Arkhistrategos, Russian - Voevoda) of the heavenly armies. He sits upon a red winged horse, wearing a crown, a lance and the book of Gospels in one hand, a trumpet extending from his mouth. Michael is associated both with the Old Testament destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah and with the visionary destruction of Sodom in the Apocalypse. The Apocalypse shows us the celestial war, in which Michael and his Angels fight against the dragon and his angels, a war which continues on earth in the spiritual combats in which men are assisted by Angels. The Archangel Michael presides over the struggle against the forces of demons. Inscription in Cyrillic on the top read: "Holy image of the Saint Michael Arkhistrategos".

This icon has collection level.
